8th Grade Visual Arts students spent the past three weeks immersed in their ceramics unit, exploring both the artistic and cultural heritage of North Carolina. They researched contemporary ceramicists who live and work in Seagrove, NC, learning about the region’s deep connections to craftsmanship, innovation, and design. Working collaboratively, students created digital presentations highlighting Seagrove artists and their techniques—an experience that strengthened their communication, research, and digital literacy skills.
Each student then applied their learning in the studio, hand-building a functional ceramic mug from start to finish. They designed unique surface decorations, experimented with glazing techniques, and experienced the full ceramic process through two kiln firings. The project encouraged critical thinking, creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving, all essential 21st-century skills.
To celebrate their hard work, students enjoyed hot chocolate from their own handmade mugs, a moment that perfectly captured the pride and purpose of creating something both artistic and functional. Every single 8th grade artist successfully completed their mug—a true testament to their dedication, craftsmanship, and growing confidence as young makers.
